The Safire is one of the best-known all-round canopies in the sport. The Safire 3 was built in New Zealand by NZ Aerosports under the Icarus Canopies brand; the company now trades as JYRO. Its successor, the Safire 4, is now JYRO’s all-round canopy, and the Safire 3 is listed in our catalog as discontinued.
JYRO describes the new canopy as the classic Safire reborn and rebuilt for today’s jumpers. The shape is familiar, but most of the details have been reworked.
What JYRO changed
- Mini ribs for better glide and flare, especially when flying on the rear risers.
- A bow-tie bridle that spreads the opening load across all four risers, for more consistent openings.
- A new line set, designed in 3D, with refined cascade lengths.
- A reworked brake set-up with more flare range and more progressive control.
- An updated Powerband, reinforced internals and optimised crossport placement.
- J-ZP fabric (30-denier rip-stop nylon, silicone-coated on both sides) in place of the earlier ZP.
What stayed: the planform and the centre-to-tip inflation of the Safire 3.
A tighter size range
The Safire 4 comes in sizes from 109 to 189 sq ft. JYRO has moved the lowest wing loadings to the Helium, so the recommended wing loading for the Safire 4 is 1.0 to 1.6 lb/sq ft. You can check where you fall with our wing loading calculator, which works in pounds or kilograms.

Who it is for
JYRO places the Safire 4 in the middle of its range. It is aimed at jumpers right after their A licence, at jumpers with a few hundred jumps who want a reliable everyday canopy, and at experienced jumpers – including canopy-shy ones – who want something easy and fun to fly. In its launch article JYRO describes the useful range as roughly from the first canopy after licensing up to around 2,000 jumps.
The early testers JYRO quotes mostly praise smooth, on-heading openings, a strong and easy flare and responsive rear risers.
Not to be confused with the S-fire
The S-fire and X-fire have similar names but, according to JYRO, they are completely different canopies made by another manufacturer.
